Raquel Guiomar

Raquel is a PhD student interested in the cerebellum's role in the pathophysiology of schizophrenia. She explores the clinical efficacy of transcranial Direct Current Stimulation (tDCS) and its neural mechanisms of action using functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) during rest and social-emotional tasks.

As a PhD student in Clinical Psychology, my research focus is on the role of the cerebellum in the negative symptoms of schizophrenia. I am particularly interested in exploring the mechanisms of action of transcranial Direct Current Stimulation (tDCS) applied to the cerebellum and its clinical efficacy in reducing symptoms of schizophrenia. To gain a deeper understanding, my research combines tDCS with functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) to investigate the neural changes both during rest and during social and emotional tasks.

After completing my Master's Degree in Psychology at the University of Coimbra (Portugal), I worked as a Research Assistant on two projects. Firstly, I worked on the "Fear Memory Project" which aimed to investigate the effects of neuromodulation on anxiety disorders. Secondly, I joined the "iACT with Pain Project" which aimed to develop an internet-based psychotherapeutic intervention for the self-management of chronic pain. Both opportunities allowed me to gain valuable experience and deepen my understanding of the field, and I am excited to continue my research journey in the field of psychosis, the combination of tDCS and fMRI, and the cerebellum.

On a personal note, I enjoy drawing, reading, and taking long walks—whether in nature or the city.
